What is Vitiligo?

Vitiligo is chronic autoimmune condition in which your body’s immune system rejects some of it’s own melanocytes (the cells which make melanin, the pigment in your skin) and presents as very pale, pink or almost white irregular shaped patches which often affects both sides of the body. When hair bearing areas of the skin are affected, the hairs may also lose pigment and become white. Vitiligo is very unpredictable, varying from one small patch to total loss of skin colour, with periods of stability, some return in pigment, a loss of pigment in areas of previous repigmentation or sudden widespread loss of pigment. People with vitiligo often feel self conscious as it tends to affect skin which are often on display such as their face and hands and there is often an obvious contrast with their natural skin tone.
