Skin cancers are tumours that occur due to abnormal cells in the skin which grow in an uncontrolled manner due to DNA damage and mutations. Skin cancer is the commonest form of cancer. Basal cell carcinomas (BCCs), squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) and melanomas are the commonest types of skin cancers. Some types of skin cancers are less serious than others, although all of them require treatment and the earlier they are diagnosed and treated, the better the outcome. Melanoma is a very serious skin cancer, one of several types of skin cancer which can spread to the lymph nodes and other parts of the body and kills 7 people every day in the UK. Most people feel anxious while waiting to see a Dermatologist for the initial assessment and when given a diagnosis of skin cancer go through a range of emotions of sadness, anxiety about their future and the financial security of their loved ones and sometimes even anger.
Any new growths, lumps, marks, patches or moles, sores or ulcers that don’t heal, rough or scaly patches which crusts or bleed, warty lumps, changes to existing moles or freckles or blemishes, discolouration under the nail or oozing, crusting, scaling, itching, bleeding or pain of any of such lesions warrant a prompt assessment. Skin cancers present differently in different people so it is important to seek medical assessment promptly if you have any concern about skin cancer.
It is important for everyone to check their skin regularly as anyone can develop a skin cancer, even people with darker skin. Some people find it difficult to know if there are any changes or concerning features when they check their skin or if there are new lesions particularly in areas which are difficult to see such as their back or scalp and they often find a full body skin check by a Dermatologist for an expert assessment helpful. Dermatologists, like Dr Sewell are specialists who have the highest level of training in assessing skin and treating pre-cancerous or cancerous lesions.
