What are moles?

Moles also known as melanocytic naevi are harmless growths. The more moles you have (particularly if you have more than 50 moles), the more sun exposure you have had, sunburns particularly as a child, previous blistering sunburns, a family history of melanoma, previous or current sunbed use or having fair skin increases your risk of skin cancer. However, it is important for everyone to check their moles regularly as all moles have the potential to change and become cancerous.

If you have a mole which is changing, bleeds, becoming itchy or is sore, have developed a new mole after the age of 40 or have any concerns when you check your skin, it is important to get it checked out promptly.
