What is eczema?

Eczema, also known as dermatitis is very common skin condition presenting as itching and redness. Other signs which may occur are scaling, flaking, swelling, scratch marks, weeping, crusting, thickening of the skin due to repeated scratching, affected skin becoming darker or lighter than surrounding unaffected skin, cracks forming on the skin, bumps underneath the skin and dryness. Contrary to popular belief, it can occur at any age, even at 90+ for the first time.

There are many types of eczema; atopic eczema, discoid or nummular eczema, irritant contact eczema, allergic contact eczema, seborrhoeic eczema, pompholyx or dyshidrotic eczema, asteatotic eczema or eczema craquele and gravitational or venous or varicose eczema.

Eczema typically affects one’s quality of life and the itching can affect sleep, resulting in tiredness and irritability. Depending on where your eczema is located and how severe it is, it can affect your day to day life, including your ability to work and relationships, make you self conscious and may affect your mental well being. The majority of people with eczema feel frustrated as the itching is hugely debilitating, the moisturisers they have tried haven’t help and they have often been prescribed cream after cream which do not control their eczema. Some eczemas can be cured with a careful management plan, but the majority although cannot be cured can be controlled to a great degree.
