What is cellulitis?

Cellulitis is infection of the skin. Bacteria gets into the skin due to a break in the skin for example from a cut, scratch, insect bite, athlete’s foot or eczema. Cellulitis presents as redness on the skin, often associated with increased warmth in this area of skin, swelling and tenderness, as well as a feeling of being generally unwell with a raised temperature. At the early stages, redness or feeling unwell may precede the other signs and symptoms. Cellulitis can occur anywhere and blisters may form. The severity of cellulitis varies from mild to severe and it is important that it is managed promptly to avoid complications such as septicaemia, abscess formation and the infection spreading to muscle or bone.
